Papayanakos' Late Goal Earns Men's Lax the 'W'

VICTOR, N.Y. – A goal in the waning moments gave the St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team the 10-9 win over Brockport at Pinnacle Athletic Complex Thursday afternoon. With the win, Fisher moves to 3-1 on the year, while Brockport drops to 1-3.

With the two sides locked at nine goals a piece and just under a minute left, the Cardinals took a timeout to devise a plan. The play worked as with just 29 ticks on the clock, Nick Papayanakos ripped a shot that would eventually send Fisher to victory.

Fisher came out of the gates firing, scoring the game's first three goals. The squad used their man up unit as Andrew Rosso recorded two on the man advantage followed by a man-up goal by Drew Brown, all in the first seven minutes. The Golden Eagles would tally one next, but Mitch Rein added another for the Cardinal and Gold to give Fisher the 4-1 lead after one period of play.
The second stanza saw a little more even play, with both programs marking two more goals on the scoresheet.

Going into the second half, Brockport surmounted a comeback, recording five of the contest's next seven goals to even the score at 8-8 with just under six minutes in regulation. The two team's would exchange goals once again over the next few minutes, but Papapayankos last second goal held true, securing the Cardinal win.

As previously mentioned, the man up unit for Fisher played exceptionally well, tagging Brockport on four of its seven opportunities.

Papayanakos finished the day with four goals, while Rein and Rosso each nabbed two. Glenn Roschetzky played the role of helper on the day, racking up three assists.

Tanner Swan manned all 60 minutes in net for the Cardinals, racking up a season-high 16 saves.

Men's lacrosse will return to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday as the team hosts Oswego State for its first home contest of the 2017 season.
