PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Freshman pitcher
Anthony Brophy picked up his third win of the season and lowered his earned run average to 0.95 as the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College baseball team capped its time in Florida with a 9-1 win over No. 18 Marietta College on Sunday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. With the win, Fisher, which is ranked ninth overall according to the latest d3baseball.com national poll, improved to 5-4 on the season while Marietta dropped to 2-2.
Brophy held the Pioneers scoreless over 7.0 innings of work and allowed eight hits while striking out three before being relieved by
Allen Murphy in the eighth inning. Murphy worked a scoreless inning with a strikeout while preseason All-American
Loukas Brigham pitched the ninth and surrendered one run on one hit with a pair of Ks.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals plated three runs on four hits in the top of the second frame.
Scott Eisenmenger led off with a single and moved to second after
Malcolm Kelsey followed suit with a single of his own. The pair moved up on a sacrifice bunt by
Thomas Pasquale and came around to score two batters later when
Victor Konstantinovsky smacked a two-run double to put Fisher up 2-0. Konstantinovsky wouldn't remain at second base for long, however, as
Evan Ryan drove him in with a single to make it 3-0 before Marietta could escape the inning.
Fisher blew the game open in the top of the sixth as
Nate Roethel lined a deep triple that plated
Jack Trotman and Ryan, each of whom had drawn a walk, to give the Cardinals a five-run lead. As the inning continued,
Antony Mantova supplied the power with a two-run blast to stake Fisher to a 7-0 lead heading to the seventh inning.
In the ninth inning, Fisher tacked on another run with
Justin Graham collecting a base knock and an RBI in the process. The Pioneers plated their only run of the game in the home half of the ninth with a two-out run scoring triple before Brigham retired the side with a strikeout to give Fisher the win.
The Cardinals notched 11 hits in the game overall. Ryan, Kelsey, Mantova and Eisenmenger each had two hits while they combined for five runs scored. Trotman drew a pair of walks and laid down a sacrifice in four plate appearances.
Fisher will return to action at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday when it takes on Haverford College in a doubleheader in Haverford, Pa.
