LAKELAND, Fla. – In an 11 inning game, the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College baseball team fell 3-2 to No. 20 The College of New Jersey Saturday evening at Historic Henley Park. The Cardinals move to .500 on the season (4-4) while TCNJ improves to 2-0.
It was a real pitching duel as neither team could get much going off of Fisher's
Jim Dawson and TCNJ's Joe Cirillo. The Lions tagged Fisher for one in the opening frame though, and then doubled up in the six.
Finding themselves behind, 2-0, in the ninth, Fisher didn't falter. With one out,
Jack Trotman singled to get himself on first.
Nate Roethel then hit a blooper double right over the third basemen's head that put both runners in scoring position.
Antony Mantova then grounded out but it allowed Trotman to score from third. With two outs, a wild pitch allowed
Stephen Edgett, who was pinch running for Roethel, to cross home plate and tie the game up.
Kevin Berge then came in on the hill in the bottom and struck out the first batter. The second Lion hitter got on with a single but was thrown out on at second on a third strike to close the inning out.
In both of the extra innings, the Cardinals were able to get runners in scoring position but couldn't get them across the plate. TCNJ was then able to get a runner to home in the bottom of the 11th.
Dawson pitched 8.0 innings for Fisher, only allowing the first two runs to score. Berge picked up the loss on the day, while striking out two.
Baseball returns to the diamond tomorrow for its final game of the Spring Break trip. The team will square off against No. 18 Marietta in Port Charlotte.
