PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's basketball drained five 3-point field goals in the first half and never looked back as the Cardinals overwhelmed Alfred, 74-42, Tuesday evening on Bobby Wanzer Court in Manning and Napier Varsity Gym. With the win, Fisher climbed above the .500 mark and improved to 11-10 overall and 8-4 in the conference. Alfred remained winless in Empire 8 play and moved to 2-19 overall and 0-12 in the conference standings.
The Cardinals came out firing as the game got underway and jumped out to a 17-2 lead midway through the first quarter after knocking down four 3-pointers including two apiece from
Caroline Robertson and
Chelsea Repard. Fisher stretched its lead to 20 points with 2:55 left to go in the period after stringing together seven straight points to take a 24-4 lead.
Trailing by 19 to start the second quarter, Alfred would score inside to come to within 17 points, but the Fisher quickly built its lead to 25 points courtesy of a 6-0 run capped by a pair of free throws by
Erin Hulbert to make it 40-15. The Saxons scored seven of the game's next 11 points to close out the first half trailing Fisher, 44-22.
The Cardinals pushed their lead back to 24 points to start the third quarter, but Alfred used a 13-2 run, which ate up nearly seven minutes of the third quarter, to come to within 13 points, 50-37. The visitors weren't able to sustain their momentum, however, as Fisher responded in a big way with an 18-2 run that featured 13 straight points to open up a 29-point lead late in the fourth frame.  Â
In all, 10 players scored for Fisher led by Robertson's 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. The junior also posted eight rebounds, four steals and three assists in the win. Hulbert added 10 points while
Jessica Rhone finished with nine points and four boards.Â
Maria Kelleher also contributed nine points at the guard position. Repard and
Abby Marsden scored six points apiece for Fisher.
The Cardinals shot 8-of-20 from 3-point land and were 25-for-58 (.431) from the field overall. The team was credited with 15 assists on 25 field goals and forced Alfred into 20 turnovers on the defensive end of the court.
Fisher will celebrate its senior class at 2 p.m. on Saturday as the Cardinals host the Nazareth College Golden Flyers in the annual Battle of the Beaks on Bobby Wanzer Court in Manning and Napier Varsity Gym.
