HOBOKEN, N.J. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games on Friday as the Cardinals outlasted Stevens Institute of Technology in overtime, 94-86, on the road inside Canavan Arena. Fisher, which has already secured the top overall seed and the right to host the upcoming Empire 8 Championship, improved to 19-5 on the year and 14-1 in the conference standings. Stevens fell to 17-7 with the win and 10-5 against Empire 8 opponents.
Neither team gained a clear advantage as the first half got underway until the Cardinals' offense produced eight unanswered points fueled by a three-point play by
Tyler Farrell to jump out to a double-digit lead, 32-22, with 5:22 to go before a break in action. Stevens weathered the run, however, and was able to climb to within two points after scoring 12 of the game's next 16 points capped by a 6-0 run to make it 36-34.
With just over a minute to go in the half, Fisher came up with a stop on the defensive end of the floor and scored five points including a 3-pointer from Farrell to hold a five-point lead at the break, 41-36.
The Cardinals pushed their lead back to double figures to start the second half as
Alex Sausville and
Ryan Henderson connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to put Fisher up 47-36, but Stevens once again answered as the Ducks went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to just three points with 15:40 left to go in regulation.Â
Fisher maintained a one-possession lead for the next five minutes until
Dennis Hare started and finished a 12-1 run with mid-range jumpers to stake the Cardinals to a 68-60 advantage. The momentum would be temporary though as the Ducks battled back and eventually took the lead, 71-70, after orchestrating a 9-0 run with just over five minutes left to go in the second half.Â
After exchanging baskets over the next two minutes, Stevens' lead would grow to three points but the Cardinals were able to keep it close with timely free throws from Hare and
Tyler English in the final minute. Trailing by two points with the ball, Fisher worked the clock until Sausville was able to find a lane and get to the rim for the game-tying layup to send the game into overtime knotted up at 81-81.
The Cardinals dominated the extra period and led off with seven unanswered points while holding the Ducks to just one field goal over four minutes of action to escape with the win.
Four players finished in double figures in the scoring column for Fisher led by
Keegan Ryan's 28 points on 12-of-17 shooting. English finished with 16 points including seven at the free throw line while Henderson and Hare scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.Â
The game featured 10 ties and 13 lead changes overall. Fisher shot 32-for-63 from the floor and 22-of-28 from the charity stripe.
Fisher closes out its regular season at 5 p.m. on Saturday against Hartwick College in Oneonta.
