ONEONTA, N.Y. – Keegan Ryan of the St. John Fisher College men's basketball team notched his 41st career double-double and moved into sole possession of first place on the program's all-time rebounding list as the Cardinals, who have now won eight games in a row, won in overtime for the second straight night, 90-88, after beating Hartwick in Lambros Arena.
Fisher, which has now won 20 games in a season nine times under head coach
Rob Kornaker, improved to 20-5 and 15-1 in the Empire 8. Hartwick closed out its regular season at 16-9 overall and 9-7 in the conference standings.
Ryan, who has averaged 9.1 rebounds during his career, has amassed 962 over 106 career games to move him ahead of Hall-of-Famer
Chris Sullivan who held the record for 23 years with 956 career boards. Â
Ryan finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds in the win.Â
Tyler English added a game-high 25 points along with six rebounds and five assists. Freshman
Sammy Robinson finished with 18 points and seven boards while
Michael D'Amico contributed eight points for the Cardinals.Â
After falling behind by four points to end the first half, the Cardinals found themselves trailing by 11, 74-63, with just over seven minutes left to play in the game. From there, Fisher came to life and turned a double-digit deficit into a tie game after putting together a 13-2 run over the next three minutes highlighted by three 3-pointers to knot things up at 76-76.
Hartwick quickly reclaimed the lead with five straight points and held the advantage until
Ryan Henderson found D'Amico for a 3-pointer to tie the game at 84-84 with just 15 seconds left in regulation.Â
With the score still tied after 40 minutes of play, both teams headed to overtime where the Hawks struck first. Trailing by two, Fisher would tie the score again after free throws by Robinson and English and took the lead for good with two minutes still showing on the game clock when D'Amico found some room and scored a lay-up to make it 90-88.
The Cardinals will take their winning streak into the Empire 8 Championship, which is set to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday on Bobby Wanzer Court in Manning and Napier Varsity Gym. The Cardinals secured the top overall seed and will face fourth-seeded Nazareth College in the semifinals. Second-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology will duel third-seeded Utica College at 8 p.m. in the other semifinal contest. The winner of each will square off at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
