ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team hauled in 15 offensive rebounds on Saturday night, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals fell to Rochester Institute of Technology, 65-49, inside the Louis Alexander Polestra as part of the second annual Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. With the defeat, Fisher fell to 3-4 on the season while the Tigers remained unbeaten and finished the day at 7-0.
Olivia Baumann led Fisher with 11 points on 3-for-6 shooting. The freshman knocked down all four of her free throw attempts in 12 minutes of action.
Liga Astra Kalnina grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and added six points. Senior
Caroline Robertson added five points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists in the loss.
Katy McInerney contributed six points and hauled in three rebounds.
The Cardinals fell behind in the early minutes of the opening quarter before a layup by Kalnina and a 3-pointer from Robertson staked Fisher to a three-point lead, 7-4. The Tigers would tie the game with a triple of their own in the corner, but the Cardinals answered as Robertson found
Alex Reigle for three points to make it 10-7.
As the period ticked down, both teams swapped baskets on the offensive end of the floor with RIT clinging to a 13-12 lead heading to the second stanza.
The Tigers controlled the pace as the second frame got underway and pushed their lead to double digits after scoring 11 unanswered points over the first three minutes of play. Trailing 23-12, the Cardinals closed out the first half on a strong note as they outscored the Tigers 14-7 over the final six minutes of play including a 3-pointer from
Chelsea Repard with four seconds left to head into the break down four points, 30-26.
Coming out of the break, RIT continued its surge and orchestrated an 11-2 run that ate up over five minutes of time to make it 41-28 in the visitor's favor. Fisher countered with a run of its own to cut the deficit down to six points courtesy of an 8-1 burst fueled by six points from Baumann including an old-fashioned 3-point play to make it 42-36.
Heading to the final quarter, Fisher seemed to run out of gas as the Tigers pushed their margin to as many as 19 points en route to the non-conference win.
The Cardinals will return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 30th with another non-conference bout as they host The College at Brockport in Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.
