PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team scored a season-high 79 points on Saturday and defeated The College at Brockport Golden Eagles, 79-66, in a non-conference tilt inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court. With the win, Fisher evened its season mark at 4-4 while the Golden Eagles fell to 3-7 overall.
Caroline Robertson led all players and notched a new career-high with 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting. The senior added seven rebounds, two assists and was 5-for-7 from the charity stripe.
Sydney Masna also set a new career-high with 12 points to go along five rebounds while
Erin Hulbert finished with nine points, five assists and four rebounds in the win.
Alex Reigle added eight points and
Gillian Flint provided a spark off the bench with seven points, three boards and a pair of assists.
As a team, Fisher connected on nine shots overall from behind the arc and shot 24-of-52 (.462) from the floor overall.
The Cardinals were dialed in from distance over the first 10 minutes as six of their nine field goals in the first quarter were from behind the arc. Despite Fisher's hot shooting, Brockport was able to maintain pace as the two teams swapped the lead five times before the Cardinals used an 8-2 run fueled by 3-pointers from Robertson and Masna to close out the opening period with a six-point lead, 24-18.
In the second quarter, the Golden Eagles pulled to within one, 28-27, thanks in large part to a 7-2 run to begin the stanza, but Fisher continued to knock down shots. The home team opened up a seven-point cushion with a 9-3 burst that included six unanswered points, four of which came at the free throw line, to head into halftime with a 37-30 advantage.
As the second half got underway, Brockport erased the Cardinals' lead and tied the game courtesy of a 9-2 run, but not to be outdone, Fisher responded with eight straight points of its own to create some breathing room.
With the home team clinging to a five-point lead to start the final quarter, Brockport would make it a one possession game, 58-55, with 5:41 still to play. From there, Fisher rattled off nine unanswered points capped by a 3-pointer from Flint to open up a double-digit edge, 67-55, with just under four minutes still showing on the game clock.
As the frame continued, Brockport cut the Cardinals' lead to single digits, but couldn't slow Fisher's momentum as head coach
Melissa Kuberka's squad scored eight consecutive points at the free throw line to make it 77-61 en route to the non-conference decision.
Fisher will now enjoy a short break until it opens up conference play at 8 p.m. on Tuesday when it travels to Utica to battle the Pioneers in what will mark its Empire 8 opener.
