ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team was tripped up by nationally-ranked University of Rochester on Thursday night as the Cardinals lost to the Yellowjackets, 64-45, in a non-conference pairing at the Louis Alexander Palestra as part of the second annual Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. After the loss, Fisher stands at 3-3 while Rochester, which is ranked ninth in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, sits at 7-1 overall.
In the opening quarter, both teams exchanged blows as Rochester opened up the contest with 11 of the game's first 16 points to hold a six-point edge, with 2:51 to play in the period. Fisher continued to battle as
Katy McInerney knocked down a 3-pointer on a feed from
Erin Hulbert to spark an 11-4 run that staked the Cardinals to a slim lead, 16-15, as the second quarter got underway.
The lead would be temporary, however, as Rochester took control of the game and strung together a 24-3 run that bridged the second and third quarters to hold a 20-point advantage, 39-19, with 2:30 gone by in the second half.
Trailing by double digits, Fisher would swap points with Rochester until the Yellowjackets furthered their cause with an 8-2 run capped by six unanswered points to make it 56-30 in the fourth quarter.
Undaunted, the Cardinals continued to work the ball and outscored U of R 15-10 in the final frame.
McInerney paced Fisher with a career-high 10 points to go along with a pair of rebounds.
Caroline Robertson finished with nine points and three boards while Hulbert added four points and a team-leading nine rebounds including four on the offensive glass.
Chelsea Repard contributed eight points and
Olivia Baumann and
Sydney Masna scored five points apiece.
Fisher will play again at 6 p.m. on Saturday as it continues play in the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout against Rochester Institute of Technology.
