Men's Basketball Undone by No. 17 Rochester in Opening Game of Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team was unable to keep pace with nationally-ranked University of Rochester on Thursday as the Cardinals fell to the No. 17 Yellowjackets, 82-64, in a non-conference matchup as part of the second annual Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout.  With the defeat, Fisher fell to 2-4 overall while Rochester improved to 7-1.

The Cardinals will return to the mix at 8 p.m. on Saturday as they continue play in the Crosstown Shootout in a meeting with host Rochester Institute of Technology.

Rochester scored the game's first points and never looked back as the Yellowjackets held a six-point lead after a layup from Jake Haight made it 16-10 with 11:44 remaining in the first half.  Rochester would push its edge to 17 points after scoring 11 unanswered to hold a 27-10 margin before the Cardinals cut the deficit to nine points with just under four minutes remaining on the clock.

After exchanging baskets down the stretch, U of R converted all six of its free throw attempts in the closing minutes to head into halftime with a double-digit lead, 41-25.

Fisher continued to play from behind in the second half and eventually found itself in a 23-point hole late in the stanza as Rochester picked up its fifth consecutive win.

Haight led the way for Fisher with a season-high 15 points to go along with three rebounds in 18 minutes while Ryan Henderson, Mark Valeriani and Tyler Farrell each finished with nine points on the night.

Overall, the Cardinals were 18-for-48 (.375) from the floor and converted a season-high 23 free throws while shooting over 81 percent from the charity stripe.
