ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Four different players scored in double figures as the St. John Fisher College men's basketball team got back to its winning ways on Saturday with an 81-67 victory over host Rochester Institute of Technology in the second annual Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. With the win, Fisher improved to 3-4 while the Tigers evened their season standing at 4-4.
Sammy Robinson scored a game-high 17 points after knocking down 6-of-12 shots from the floor.
Tyler English finished with 14 points, five assists and a pair of rebounds while
Jake Haight, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, added 10 points, eight boards including five on the offensive glass and four steals. Senior guard
Michael D'Amico chipped in with 13 points, seven rebounds and five helpers.
As a team, Fisher was 31-for-65 from the field including nine makes from behind the arc. The Cardinals shared the ball well with 20 assists on 31 field goals and were forced into just 13 turnovers.
It was a back-and-forth affair from the get-go as both teams found their groove early. With the game tied at 7-7 just three-and-a-half minutes in, Fisher began to create separation as a 3-pointer from D'Amico sparked a 13-2 run for Fisher including eight unanswered points in a span of nearly five minutes to hold a 20-9 lead. The momentum shifted quickly though as the Tigers responded with an 11-0 run of their own to knot the game at 20-20 with 8:27 remaining in the opening half.
As the half wore on, Fisher's stock continued to rise as the Cardinals poured in 21 of the game's next 29 points. Defensively, head coach
Mike Grosodonia II's squad held the Tigers to just two made field goals in a span of over six minutes to open up a double-digit lead, 41-28, with 2:20 still to go before intermission.
Coming out of the break and holding a 14-point lead, Fisher's advantage would grow to as many as 17 points after three straight layups from Robinson made it 67-50. RIT tried to get something going late with a 10-3 run, but a 3-pointer from
James Leone on a pass from D'Amico halted the Tigers' progress as the Cardinals went on to convert four free throws down the stretch en route to the win.
Fisher will enjoy nearly two weeks off before returning to the hardwood on December 29th for the annual Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium. RPI and Lancaster Bible will square off at 6 p.m. followed by Fisher hosting Old Westbury at 8 p.m. The four teams will continue play the following days with consolation and championship games.
