Women's Basketball Claims First Win of Season With Decision Over Chatham

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Three players scored in double figures as the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday as the Cardinals downed Chatham University, 69-57, in the consolation game of the McDaniel Tip-Off Invitational.  The victory, which marked the first in head coach Melissa Kuberka's time at Fisher, improved the Cardinals to 1-1 on the season while the Cougars fell to 1-2.

The first quarter was a see-saw affair as neither team was able to gain a clear advantage with the lead changing hands several times over the first 10 minutes of play before Erin Hulbert staked the Cardinals to a 16-15 edge heading to the second period.

In the second quarter, Fisher used a 10-2 run over the first four minutes of play capped off by a 3-pointer in the corner by Hulbert to create some breathing room with a 26-17 lead.  Chatham would cut the lead to six points with a triple of its own at the 5:30 mark, but that would be the last field goal the Cougars would manage in the quarter as Fisher closed out the frame with a quick 5-1 run to hold a 31-21 lead at halftime.

The Cardinals grew their lead in the third quarter courtesy of an 11-2 run as freshman Sydney Masna staked Fisher to a 16-point margin, 44-28, with three straight free throws but the Cougars countered with a scoring run of their to pull to within nine points, 48-39, with 38 seconds left to play in the stanza.  With momentum swinging to Chatham and time for a final possession, Fisher went to work on the offensive end as Hulbert drew the defense and kicked it out to Caroline Robertson who buried a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals a 12-point lead, 51-39, heading to the fourth.

Both teams continued to battle in the final quarter, as the Cougars pulled to within eight points with just over three minutes left to play, but that was as close as they would get as Hulbert sank another from distance to all but seal the win.

Hulbert scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting including three from behind the arc.  The junior guard also added seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals in the win.  Robertson, who was named to the All-Tournament Team following the win, matched Hulbert with 18 points of own along with eight boards and a career-high six blocked shots.  Chelsea Repard finished with 10 points and Nicole Robinson added five points and five rebounds.  Olivia Baumann contributed eight points in the win.

Defensively, Fisher limited the Cougars to just 19 made field goals as Chatham went 19-for-52 (.365) from the floor and 3-for-14 from 3-point land.  The Cardinals forced 20 turnovers and enjoyed a slight rebounding edge, 36-35.

Fisher will continue its play on the road at 6 p.m. on Tuesday as the Cardinals travel to Buffalo to take on Medaille College.
