Women's Volleyball Grabs Two Conference Wins In Empire 8 Crossover

UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team picked up two Empire 8 Conference victories on Saturday as they traveled to Utica College for an Empire 8 Crossover. The Cardinals defeated the Pioneers in straight sets 25-11, 25-15, 25-23 in their first match of the day. The team followed up with another straight set victory over Elmira 27-25, 25-23, 25-13. With the wins, Fisher improves to 17-5 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8. Utica fell to 5-15 and 0-4 in the E8, while Elmira fell to 11-9 and 0-5 in conference play.
 
Fisher dominated the match offensively finishing with a team hitting percentage of .337 and 41 total kills.
 
The Cardinals had three finish with double digit kills, Katie Mazierski led the way finishing with 12, Izzy Smith posted a new career high with 11, and Anna Marcy added 10. 
 
The first set was highlighted by a 16-2 run that included five kills from Smith and three aces from Elise Kreuz. Kreuz also finished with game-high 13 digs and four service aces.
 
The Cardinals capped off the second set with a 16-5 run highlighted by three Marcy service aces. Phoebe Kane finished with a season high 37 assists, while Amanda Miller pitched in five kills.  
 
In the second match of the day, the Cardinals' offense was the key to victory yet again. The team finished with a hitting percentage of .305 and 40 total kills.
 
Marcy led the way with a game-high 17, while Mazierski added nine and Smith pitched in six. In the first set, Fisher was able to fight off a late Elmira comeback with the help from a Marcy service ace that sealed the tightly contested first set.
 
Nine total aces helped the Cardinals stay in control and proved to be the difference maker in sets two and three. Kane again finished with 37 assists and Kreuz notched another game-high 15 digs.
 
The Cardinals are back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as they travel to Buffalo to take on Buffalo State in a non-conference matchup.
