Football Looks to Build on Momentum Saturday at Ithaca in Non-Conference Showdown

10/19/2017 11:16:00 AM

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Fresh off the longest game in its history, the St. John Fisher College football team will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as it travels to Ithaca to take on the Bombers in what will be a non-conference game at Ithaca's Jim Butterfield Stadium.

The Cardinals, who earned their first win of the season last Saturday courtesy of a 39-36 win in five overtimes over Utica College, own a 10-9 overall mark against the Bombers dating back to 1998.

Fans unable to make the trip to the Finger Lakes Region can still follow all of Saturday's action by tuning to 95.7 on the FM dial or 950 AM as Gene Battaglia and Nathan Nigolian '14 have the call on ESPN ROCHESTER.

Follow the game using LIVE STATS and LIVE VIDEO or learn more about both teams before kickoff by reading the FULL SET OF GAME NOTES.

SERIES HISTORY: Saturday's contest marks the 20th meeting between Ithaca and St. John Fisher as the Cardinals have defused the Bombers 10 times overall since their first meeting in 1998.  This weekend's game will have a slightly different feel to it though as this will mark the first time these two programs have met as non-conference opponents as Ithaca departed the Empire 8 beginning this fall to join the Liberty League as a full-time member.

LAST TIME OUT: You may have already heard but if not here's what happened...Fisher won...in FIVE OVERTIMES.  That's not a typo.  The Cardinals dispatched of the Utica College Pioneers last week, 39-36, in what marked the longest game in team history.  After trailing in the second quarter, 6-3, Fisher would take an 11-6 lead into halftime after JOHNATHAN LETTA found pay dirt followed by a two-point conversion.  Coming out of intermission, the Cardinals would make it an 18-9 game as BRENNEN THOMPSON blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone to give Fisher a two possession lead in the third quarter.  From there, Utica recorded a safety and scored the game-tying touchdown with 39 seconds left to send the game into overtime knotted at 18-18.  After swapping field goals over the first two overtimes, Utica was able to score a touchdown in the third, but Fisher was not to be outdone as JAMES CHAMBERS bounced to the outside for an eight yard touchdown run of his own to make it 30-30.  In the fourth overtime, DEVIN DZIKOWICZ converted a 33-yard field goal to give Fisher a temporary edge, 33-30, but Utica's kicker followed suit to send the game into a record fifth OT.  In the fifth overtime, Utica struck first with a 39-yarder, but Fisher put the game away as Chambers broke free for a 10-yard scamper and the game-winning TD.

PUTTING IN THE OT: Last Saturday's five overtime thriller was in fact the longest game in Fisher's history, but did you know the Cardinals played a four overtime game against Salisbury in 2008?  The Cardinals failed to come out on top in that game after falling to the Gulls, 58-52, at Growney Stadium.  More recently, the Cardinals were involved in a double overtime win over The College at Brockport in Courage Bowl XI back in 2015.

COMING THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH: Entering last Saturday's game against Utica, junior kicker DEVIN DZIKOWICZ had just one field goal in five games to his credit.  That all changed on Saturday, however, after the place kicker put three through the uprights.  Not only was he 3-for-3 on the night, but all three field goals came in overtime.  Dzikowicz nailed kicks from 27, 30 and 33 yards overall.  On top of that, two of his kicks kept the game as going as the Cardinals needed to make a kick to survive.
WHEN WE LAST MET: Last season, Fisher doubled up Ithaca, 34-17, but that was at home.  The last time these two teams met at Butterfield Stadium, Fisher was event better as the Cardinals blanked Ithaca on its home field, 34-0.

MILESTONE WATCH: Senior wideout MIKE COLLICHIO is approaching some impressive milestones as the senior needs just five receiving yards to become just the fifth player if Fisher's history to surpass the 2,000 yard plateau for his career.  His 138 career receptions is fifth all-time and he needs just 27 more catches to pass Nathan Nigolian for fourth place in the record book.  Additionally, Collichio's 16 touchdowns is tied for the seventh-most in program history.  His next touchdown will tie him with Jimmy Smith (2005-08) for sixth place.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB: Senior running back JAMES CHAMBERS joined an exclusive club during Fisher's win over Utica last week.  The Lockport native rushed for 123 yards and in doing so surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards.  The accomplishment puts Chambers on a pretty short list as just six other running backs in Fisher's storied history have rushed for more yards: (Mark Robinson - 4,840; Jason Meyers - 4,017; Cody Miller - 3,279; James Reile - 3,163; Gary Fitch - 2,501; Tony Fusco - 2,213).  With four games left on the season, Chambers could continue to move up the list as he currently sits at 2,058 yards.

SCOUTING ITHACA: The Bombers enter Saturday's matchup sporting a 3-3 record, however, Ithaca fell in its last game to RPI, 27-14, after holding a 14-0 lead heading into the final quarter.  Through six games, the Bombers have played three opponents that appear on Fisher's schedule this year after playing Alfred, Brockport and Hobart.  Against those three, Ithaca has gone 1-2 with its sole victory coming in a 24-21 decision over the Statesmen.  To date, Ithaca leads the Liberty League in passing yards per game (268.0) and is second overall in total yards with nearly 378 yards per game.

On the offensive side of the ball, WAHID NABI has proven more than capable at the quarterback position despite only being a freshman.  Through five starts, Nabi has amassed nearly 1,400 passing yards and seven touchdowns while playing to a 137.8 rating.  At the wide receiver position, WILL GLADNEY leads the team and the conference with 44 receptions, 700 receiving yards and five touchdowns.  ANDREW VITO (19 receptions, 313 yards) and JR ZAZZARA (22 receptions, 235 yards) also pose a threat downfield.

The Bombers, however, have struggled to get the ground game going and rank sixth in their conference at 106 rushing yards per game.  TRISTAN BROWN gets a majority of the carries and has produced 288 yards and three touchdowns through five games.

Defensively, Ithaca, which ranks third in its conference in total yards allowed per game this season (317.5), boasts four defenders to have recorded at least 40 tackles on the season.  DAN LOIZOS leads the team with 47 stops while KENNY BRADLEY and PAT MINOGUE have been credited with 46 and 44 tackles, respectively.  BRIAN GILL has come up with 42 stops this season.  The Bombers do feature a potent defensive line though as the team has recorded 11 sacks to date.

HALL OF FAME NEWS: The St. John Fisher College Athletics Hall of Fame will see two former football players enshrined during an induction ceremony on November 3 at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa as Noah Fehrenbach '06 and Gene Lang '07 will each be honored.  A three-time All-Conference honoree and an All-American selection in 2005, Fehrenbach rewrote the record books at Fisher and is still the program's all-time leader in receiving yards with 3,083 (nearly 1,500 yards more than second place), receptions (205) and touchdowns (36).  A two-time All-American, Lang was named to the Third-Team All-Decade Team by
D3football.com at the conclusion of his career at linebacker.  To date, he still ranks third all-time in total tackles with 325.  Lang is a two-time First-Team All-Conference selection by the Empire 8 and was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year in 2006 – the conference's first-ever player to earn that award.  Furthermore, he was named All East Region by D3football.com twice and went on to be named the 2006 Don Hansen Gazette Linebacker of the Year.

ON THE HORIZON: After Saturday's game, Fisher will have just one more home contest on the docket.  The Cardinals will host SUNY Cortland on October 28th in what will mark senior day before closing out the regular season with two road games at Morrisville (November 4th) and Buffalo State (November 11th).
