PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball remained unbeaten in Empire 8 play and extended its winning streak to six games with an 84-63 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday on Bobby Wanzer Court in Manning and Napier Varsity Gym. The win moved Fisher to 11-4 overall and 6-0 in the conference standings while the Ducks fell to 12-4 on the season and 6-2 against conference opponents.
Stevens came out firing with back-to-back 3-pointers over the game's first two minutes to take a slim lead, 6-3. The advantage would quickly turn, however, as Fisher's offense caught fire. The Cardinals scored 21 of the contest's next 25 points including two different 8-0 runs led by four 3-point field goals from freshman
Sammy Robinson to claim a 24-10 lead with 12:36 left to play in the opening half.
The Ducks responded with four quick points of their own to pull to within 10 points at 10:43, 24-14, but it did little to slow down Fisher's high-powered offense as the Cardinals erupted for 22 unanswered points in a span of 5:36 to make it a 32-point affair, 48-16. During the run, seven different players scored a point led by
James Leone's five points.Â
Fisher continued to pour it on as the half wound down and took a 24-point edge into halftime, 56-32, despite a four-point run by Stevens to close out the frame.
Â
The visitor's run spilled over into the start of the second half as Stevens scored six more points before the Cardinals halted the spree with a lay-up by
Dennis Hare. From there, both teams found a groove as Stevens scored six unanswered before Fisher responded with seven consecutive points of its own to make it 78-55 with 5:53 left to play.
The Ducks would come as close as 19 points down the stretch, but the lead was too great as Fisher posted the 21-point win.
Robinson led all scorers with a career-best 18 points. The freshman also added four rebounds and a steal in the win. Hare finished with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting while
Tyler English and Leone finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.Â
Keegan Ryan contributed eight points and eight boards to Fisher's cause.Â
   Â
Defensively, Fisher held Stevens to just 32.3 percent shooting overall (20-for-62) while limiting the Ducks to just four made 3-pointers all game. As a team, the Cardinals shot 26-for-51 (.510) and buried eight triples in all.Â
The Cardinals take on Houghton College in Empire 8 play at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at home. Â Â Â
