The St. John Fisher College softball team swept the Spartans of D'Youville College in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday. With both wins, Fisher improves to 15-3 on the season.
Fisher 1, D'Youville 0
Neither team would put runs on the board until the fifth inning, starting when D'Youville pitcher Kalie McHenry walked
Katie Mazierski. Just two plays later,
Sarah Kubik doubled to left center, sending Mazerski home for the first and only run of the game.
Pitcher
Lindsey Thayer struck out a staggering 16 batters, only allowing the Spartans one in seven innings. With the win, Thayer improves her record to 9-1. Kubik went2-for-4 with one RBI.
Fisher 7, D'Youville 1
Karlie Neale would go 2-for-3 with two doubles to kick-start a 7-1 win in game two.
Neale sparked a four-run inning in the third, and was responsible for the first run of the game on a double, as she scored Mazierski and
Julia Sortisio.
With Neale on second,
Sarah Kubik found success at the plate when she singled down the left-field line, scoring Neale. Up next was
Ashley Prince who also tacked on an RBI single, scoring Kubik.
The Cardinals would have another exciting rally in the sixth, as they would score three more times before the end of the inning.
With
Lauren Owens on base,
Kristina Balsano singled to left field, advancing Owens to third. On the next at bat, Balsano attempted to steal when the second baseman missed the tag, throwing home in an attempt to put out Owens, who had already made it to home plate.
On the ensuing play, Sortisio found her first RBI single of the day, scoring Balsano from second. Shortly after, Kubik would reach first as Sortisio scored, bringing the score to 7-0.
D'Youville answered in the top of the seventh, hitting a double and two singles resulting in one run, but could not make the game any closer when the last batter popped up to Owens for the final out.
Pitcher
Halie Schoff was credited with the win, tallying two strikeouts while allowing seven hits.
