St. John Fisher College's
Lindsey Thayer set a new College record for strikeouts in a season on Saturday. Thayer fanned 15 batters in Saturday's 1-0 loss at Alfred University, bringing her season total to 299 and breaking her own record of 294. Fisher also lost the second game of it doubleheader, 13-12, in nine innings. With the two losses, Fisher falls to 30-8 overall. The Cardinals, currently ranked No. 22 in the latest national coaches poll and No. 2 in the NCAA Division III Northeast Region, will return to action at 10 a.m. on Friday and will face Utica College in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Conference Championship, hosted by Ithaca College.
Game 1 - Alfred 1, Fisher 0
Thayer struck out 15 batters and pitched a one-hitter over six innings. The lone hit, however, came in the first inning to the first batter, who hit a solo home run off the foul pole. Thayer's season total of 299, breaks the single-season record she set last year as a freshman, when she totaled 294 strikeouts.
Game 2 - Alfred 13, Fisher 12 (9 innings)
Fisher jumped out to a 2-0 in the top of the first, but Alfred answered with three in the bottom-half of the frame. The Saxons led 11-4 after five innings, but Fisher erupted for eight runs in the sixth to take a 12-11 lead.
Danielle Ventrone hit a three-run homer to give the Cardinals the one-run lead. Alfred, however, scored in the seventh to force extra innings and won the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Katie Mazierski led Fisher with three runs scored, while Ventrone finished with three RBI.
