The St. John Fisher College softball team improved their record to 25-5 after it went 2-0 in a non-conference doubleheader against SUNY Cortland at home on Tuesday afternoon.
Fisher 4, Cortland 3
Cortland was the first to put runs on the board, scoring three in the second inning.
Fisher would answer two innings later in the bottom of the fourth when
Ashley Prince doubled just before
Sarah Kubik hit a home run.
To start the fifth inning,
Kristina Balsano was hit by a pitch, moving to second after a sacrifice bunt from
Julia Sortisio. On the next at bat,
Katie Mazierski singled, and shortly after Price singled up the middle for the game-tying RBI which sent Balsano home. Mazierski would later score the go-ahead run on an error by the catcher.
Senior Pitcher
Halie Schoff was credited with the win improving to 8-3, as
Lindsey Thayer received the save.
Fisher 7, Cortland 1
Cortland was again the first to cross home plate in game two, but would not score again for the remainder of the game.
The Cardinals put four runs on the board in the first inning as Sortisio singled to the shortstop on the first pitch. Mazierski was hit by pitch on the next at bat, and both she and Sortisio would move ahead two bases on two passed balls by the catcher, one of which allowed Sortisio to score for Fisher's first run of the game.
Just after,
Sarah Kubik singled on a bunt and stole second as
Jennifer Knaak doubled, sending in two more runs.
Fisher lit up in the second inning as well when Sortisio had another leadoff hit as she tripled to right field. On the next play Mazierski grounded out but Sortisio would cross the plate making the score 5-1.
Mazierski hit a leadoff double in the fourth inning followed shortly by a RBI triple from Prince, who would score on the following play on an error for the final run of the game.
Pitcher
Monica Moses was credited with the win improving her record to 2-1, striking out three and only allowing five hits and a run.
Fisher is back in action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday when it takes on rival Nazareth College.
