Men's Lax Returns To Winning Ways

The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse program evened its record to 3-3 in the Empire 8 Conference on Tuesday, as the Cardinals came away from Elmira College with a 13-7 win over the host Soaring Eagles.

Fisher (6-7 overall) got off to a hot start.   Benjamin Stallman won the game's opening faceoff and fed Drew Brown, who scored the game's first goal just seven seconds into the game.  Fifty-three seconds later, Brown scored again, this time off a pass from Ricky Barton to put Fisher up 2-0 just one minute into the contest.

With Fisher up 3-2 late in the first quarter, Mitch Rein scored to give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead after one.  It was the first of four-goal spurt from the Cardinals, who took a 7-2 lead.  After an Elmira goal, Gary Bova scored with three seconds left in the half to put Fisher up 8-3 at the break.

Fisher held a 9-4 edge midway through the fourth quarter, but scored three goals in the final 2:32 of the period, including two from TJ VanDeusen, to put Fisher up 12-4.

For Fisher, Brown led the Cardinals with five points on four goals and one assists.   Nick Papayanakos added two goals and one assists, while Matthew Condon finished with one goal and one assist.   Andrew Rosso also chalked up two points on two assists.

Zach Wagner and Tim Wagner also scored a goal.

Stallman was outstanding at the X, winning 17-of-20 faceoffs, while scooping up 10 ground balls (all career-highs).   Barton totaled six ground balls, while Dan Hickey led the Fisher defense with two caused turnovers.   Tanner Swan notched the win in goal, making three saves over the first 49 minutes.  Justin Townsend stopped six shots over the last 11 minutes.
