Softball Splits With Yellowjackets

The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball program earned a split in its doubleheader on Tuesday with University of Rochester.
Sophomore pitcher Lindsey Thayer struck out 14 and gave up a one-out single in the top of the seventh for Rochester's only hit in a 1-0 win over the Yellowjackets.  In the nightcap, Fisher scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough, as Rochester held on for a 6-4 win over the Cardinals.

Fisher (12-2), currently ranked No. 12 in the latest national coaches poll, will return to action on April 2nd.   The Cardinals will host Utica College at 1 p.m. for an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader.

Game One – Fisher 1, Rochester 0

Sophomore pitcher Lindsey Thayer raised her record to 7-0 on the year in the win.  Thayer struck out 14 and recorded her third shutout of the season, while lowering her ERA from 0.17 to 0.14 for the year.
Fisher's lone run came in the third inning. Katie Mazierski walked and scored two batters later on an RBI-single from freshman Ashley Prince.  Lauren Owens led Fisher with two hits in the game.

Game Two – Rochester 6, Fisher 4

Rochester took the lead for good in the first inning and pushed its edge to 6-0 going into the seventh before Fisher nearly rallied for the comeback.

After singles from Katie Mazierski and Karlie Neale, Lauren Owens got Fisher on the board with an RBI-single.

Kristina Balsano then made it a two-run game, jacking a three-run homer to make it 6-4.  Fisher would send the tying run to the plate, but the rally would fall just short.

Sarah Kubik, Neale and Mazierski each finished with two hits to lead the way for Fisher.
