The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse program delivered an impressive win on Wednesday in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, as the Cardinals defeated University of Mount Union 14-5.
With the win, Fisher, currently ranked No. 17 in the national coaches poll, improves to 2-0 overall. Mount Union, who entered the season ranked 18
th nationally by
Inside Lacrosse, falls to 2-1 on the year. Mount Union has won the Ohio Athletic Conference and gone on to play in the NCAA Division III Championship each of the last three years.
Junior
Jordan Johnson led the Cardinals with three goals and four assists. Senior
Sierra Badger added five points on four goals and one assist, while
Chrissy Cook and
Cori Holbrook (two goals, one assist) each finished the day with three points.
Fisher led 2-0 just over five minutes into the game. The Purple Raiders got on the scoreboard with less than 19 minutes left in the half, but Fisher took control after that, scoring the final six goals of the period and the first three of the second half to put the Cardinals up 10 at 11-1 with 23 minutes left.
Mackenzie LeVan,
Carly Sullivan and
Morgan Young also scored in the win for the Cardinals.
Natalie Gates led Fisher with three ground balls, while
Abbie Reed caused a team-high two turnovers.
Badger and Johnson each won four draws.
Junior goalie Haylet Peets stopped four shots in goal to earn the win.
Fisher returns to action at 4 p.m. next Wednesday and will host Buffalo State College at Growney Stadium.
