Men’s Basketball Outlasts Houghton at Home

St. John Fisher College men's basketball program held off hot-shooting Houghton College, as the Cardinals ended the game with a 6-0 run in a 95-89 victory on Saturday at Fisher's Bobby Wanzer Court in an Empire 8 Conference men's basketball matchup.

Five players scored in double-figures for Fisher (18-5 overall, 12-2 Empire), as the Cardinals shot 54.4% from the floor. Houghton, who shot 15-of-28 (53.6%) from 3-point range, falls to 10-13, 5-10.

After Fisher was trailing 73-69 with 11 minutes left, the Cardinals came out of a timeout by going on a 7-0 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Alex Sausville to give his team the lead. Houghton would tie the game up twice in the final two minutes, but Fisher ended the game with a 6-0 run over the final minute.

Hart's driving layup with 44.5 seconds left put Fisher up 89-87, and after a Fisher stop on the defensive end, Tyler English sealed the win, going 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 19.1 seconds.

Houghton jumped out to a 6-0 lead to open the game and led for the first part of the first half, until Keegan Ryan's layup with nine minutes left put the Cardinals up 29-27. It would be back-and-forth for the remainder of the first half as a layup from Hart in the final seconds tied the game at 52-52 at the break.

For Fisher, Hart led the Cardinals with 21 points, seven assists and two blocked shots.

Ottaway scored 18 points and was 2-for-2 from 3-point range. Sausville tallied 15 points and two steals, while Ryan posted his 29th career double-double and eighth in the last 11 games, finishing with 13 points and 10 boards.

Freshmen Daniel Morales and Jake Haight came off the bench and each totaled four points and four rebounds.

Fisher will close out the regular season next weekend. The Cardinals will host Hartwick College on Friday and Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday. If Fisher can win both games, it will host the Empire 8 Conference Championship the following weekend.
