St. John Fisher College will honor former men's basketball head coach and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Bobby Wanzer on Saturday.
Prior to the 2 p.m. start of the men's basketball game vs. Houghton College at Fisher's Bobby Wanzer Court, the Cardinals will recognize Coach Wanzer's children, who will be in attendance, as well as former players from Wanzer's 24-year career at Fisher.
In the main entrance into Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium, there will be displays featuring photos, articles and other memorabilia from both Wanzer's coaching and playing career with the Rochester Royals. There will also be videos to watch, including news interviews and highlights.
The men's basketball team will also debut a new patch on their jerseys, which they will wear for the remainder of the season. The jerseys will have a "WANZ" patch on the front-right shoulder.
Coach Wanzer passed away at the age of 94 on January 24th. He put together a record of 312-245, including 15 winning seasons from 1963-1987 as Fisher's first men's basketball head coach. A former Seton Hall University All-American and six-time NBA All-Star with the Rochester Royals, Wanzer was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987 with Rick Barry, Pete Maravich and Walt Frazier.
