The St. John Fisher College field hockey team earned the program's first-ever win against a nationally-ranked opponent Tuesday afternoon, downing No. 9 University of Rochester 2-1 on the road.
With the win, Fisher improves to 9-2 on the season and increase its record-breaking win streak to eight in a row. This victory also marks the first time the Cardinals have beaten the Yellowjackets in the program's five years of existence. Rochester takes its first loss of the season, dropping to 10-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Yellowjackets were the first to get on the board, scoring 6:06 into the second. Fisher was quick to answer though as
Kelly Bergamo evened up the score with a low shot to the keepers left that found the back of the net.
The Cardinals continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone earning a penalty corner at the 14:44 mark.
Lauren Fazio wound up to take it, issuing a quick pass out to
Emily Markarian on the top of the arc. The junior forward ripped a shot that beat the keeper, giving the Cardinals the 2-1 lead.
As time waned down, Fisher's defense was tested, but was able to rise to the occasion. The Yellowjackets earned three penalty corners with no time on the clock, but the Cardinals stood strong, eventually clearing the ball and ending the game.
Ashley Maynard earned the win in goal for Fisher, turning aside a career-high 11 Rochester shots.
The Cardinals will return to the field at 11 a.m. on Saturday as the team hosts Stevens Institute of Technology for an Empire 8 matchup.
