Softball Splits With RIT On A Smyrski Walkoff Single

Jessie Smyrski hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th inning to score Meghan Burns, propelling Fisher to a 1-0 victory over visiting RIT in Game 2 at Fisher's Softball Complex.  The Cardinals split with RIT after falling 9-1 in five innings in the first contest.

Fisher moves to 24-10 on the year while RIT is now 8-18.

Game 1 – Fisher 1, RIT 9 (5 innings)

RIT wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Fisher scored its lone run in the first inning.  Jennifer Knaak bunted Katie Mazierski into scoring position.  One batter later, Lauren Owens, notched an RBI single to score Mazierski.

The visitors added three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth the seal the mercy rule victory.

Halie Schoff was credited with the loss, surrendering eight hits, nine runs (3 earned), while striking out five batters.

Knaak, Mazierski, Owens, Genevieve Paeglow and Kristina Balsano each finished 1-for-2 in the game.

Game 2 – Fisher 1, RIT 0

Burns led off the 7th inning with a double to right center field and advanced to third base on a passed ball.  Smyrski delivered the game-winning hit with two outs - an RBI single to right field which tailed off just out of the reach of the fielder.  The junior had had three of Fisher's four hits in the game.

Lindsey Thayer improved to 17-5 on the season allowing three hits, while striking out eight.

The freshman pitcher got Fisher out of a jam in the sixth inning.  The Tigers leadoff hitter reached on an error and moved to third base with no outs.  Thayer struck out two batters and got the other out on a line drive to third base to keep a blank slate.  The Winthrop native now has just a .61 ERA on the year.

Burns had the only other hit for Fisher in the game.

The Cardinals return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday when they will host Alfred University in a pivotal conference doubleheader.
