Softball Splits Conference-Opener With Stevens

The St. John Fisher College Softball team split a conference doubleheader with visiting Stevens Institute on Saturday.  Fisher fell 3-1 in 13 innings in game one before coming back to take game two, 6-1.

Fisher moves to 15-5 on the year and 1-1 in Empire 8 play, while Stevens falls to 13-6-1 and 1-3, respectively.

Game 1 – Fisher 1, Elmira 3

Stevens broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the 13th inning with a two-run home run from Jessica Rees to propel the Ducks to a 3-1 victory.

Emma Savas singled down the left field line with two outs to advance Lauren Owens  to third in Fisher's final at bat, however Fisher was not able to clear the bases.

Kristina Balsano scored the lone run for Fisher on an error by the third baseman.

Stevens benefited from getting its first two batters on in the sixth inning, scoring one run to tie the game 1-1.

Fisher nearly reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning after loading the bases with one out.   Savas, Kate Disbrow and Katie Mazierski notched singles in the inning.

Savas registered a career-high three hits for Fisher in the game.

Lindsey Thayer went the distance for the Cardinals surrendering 11 hits, while mowing down 15 and allowing two earned runs.

Game 2 – Fisher 6, Stevens 1

Fisher scored four runs in the second inning to break the game open.  With the bases loaded, Balsano picked up a 2-RBI single to score Genevieve Paeglow and Savas.

The Cardinals added another run on an illegal pitch with Jessie Smyrski scoring from third base.  Fisher's final run of the inning came on a fielder's choice with Mazierski at the plate.

After Stevens scored its only run of the game in the third inning, Fisher reclaimed its four run advantage in the bottom half on an RBI single from Smyrski.

Mazierski picked up her second RBI of the day in the fifth inning, bringing Christina Sakran in from third base.

Meghan Burns was a perfect 4-for-4 in the win, while Savas and Smyrski each picked up two hits.

Thayer improved to 8-3 on the season with the win, allowing seven hits, while striking out five.

Fisher returns to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday to host a doubleheader against Elmira College on Senior Day.
