The No. 28 ranked St. John Fisher College women's basketball team picked up its first loss of the season in the semifinal round of the Wendy's College Classic Tournament in a 64-50 loss to top-seeded Roberts Wesleyan.
The Red Raiders, an NCAA Division II program, went head-to-head with Fisher as the Cardinals started out strong with a
Mary Kate Cusack 3-pointer in the first minute, followed by another 3-pointer from Mckenzie Bezon just one minute later. A layup from
Bridget Carney would put the Cardinals up 8-0 with less than three minutes gone.
Fisher gained momentum with two minutes to spare in the first quarter as
Claire Walsh sunk a 3-pointer that was followed by another Carney layup, pushing Fisher into the second quarter with a 7-point lead.
Turnovers plagued both Fisher and Roberts Wesleyan early in the second quarter in a back-and-forth battle for the first points of the period, but Roberts gained momentum and took the lead for good on a 3-pointer with just over three minutes left, pushing the score to 20-19. Fisher would not score until six minutes had passed when a layup from
McKenzie Bezon snapped a 10-0 run from the Red Raiders. Bezon and Carney combined for all six points for Fisher in the second as it headed into the third quarter with a seven-point deficit.
Roberts would take the first score of the second half and extend its lead to 13 with six minutes remaining.
Erin Hulbert's jumper broke a 6-0 Red Raiders run and shortly after, back-to-back layups from Carney brought the Cardinals within seven at the timeout.
Roberts Wesleyan pulled away in the final stanza, holding a 17-point lead with eight minutes remaining that would give the Red Raiders the victory.
Carney led Fisher with 16 points and four rebounds, while Bezon finished with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Mary Kate Cusack tallied 8 points.
Nicole Robinson collected five rebounds and six points, along with
Erin Hulbert who also tallied six.
