Women’s Basketball Falls In Semifinals Of Wendy’s Classic

The No. 28 ranked St. John Fisher College women's basketball team picked up its first loss of the season in the semifinal round of the Wendy's College Classic Tournament in a 64-50 loss to top-seeded Roberts Wesleyan.

The Red Raiders, an NCAA Division II program, went head-to-head with Fisher as the Cardinals started out strong with a Mary Kate Cusack 3-pointer in the first minute, followed by another 3-pointer from Mckenzie Bezon just one minute later. A layup from Bridget Carney would put the Cardinals up 8-0 with less than three minutes gone.

Fisher gained momentum with two minutes to spare in the first quarter as Claire Walsh sunk a 3-pointer that was followed by another Carney layup, pushing Fisher into the second quarter with a 7-point lead.

Turnovers plagued both Fisher and Roberts Wesleyan early in the second quarter in a back-and-forth battle for the first points of the period, but Roberts gained momentum and took the lead for good on a 3-pointer with just over three minutes left, pushing the score to 20-19. Fisher would not score until six minutes had passed when a layup from McKenzie Bezon snapped a 10-0 run from the Red Raiders. Bezon and Carney combined for all six points for Fisher in the second as it headed into the third quarter with a seven-point deficit.

Roberts would take the first score of the second half and extend its lead to 13 with six minutes remaining. Erin Hulbert's jumper broke a 6-0 Red Raiders run and shortly after, back-to-back layups from Carney brought the Cardinals within seven at the timeout.

Roberts Wesleyan pulled away in the final stanza, holding a 17-point lead with eight minutes remaining that would give the Red Raiders the victory.

Carney led Fisher with 16 points and four rebounds, while Bezon finished with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Mary Kate Cusack tallied 8 points.

Nicole Robinson collected five rebounds and six points, along with Erin Hulbert who also tallied six.
