Women’s Basketball Starts Season With Win over NJCU

The St. John Fisher College women's basketball won its first contest of the season 60-44 over New Jersey City University in the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic in Newark, NJ.

The Cardinals (1-0) turned in a strong defensive performance as they had 10 total steals and forced 22 turnovers in the contest.

Fisher trailed 14-12 with 2:40 remaining in the first quarter before they it on a 10-0 run to end the quarter. The run put the Cardinals was capped off by an Erin Hulbert three-pointer and put them ahead 22-14 heading into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, NJCU scored two-straight early buckets to cut the Fisher lead down to five points with 6:16 remaining before halftime. The Cardinals responded just over two minutes later as Emily Piacentini made a three-point shot to give her team a 26-18 lead. The momentum from that shot carried until halftime as Fisher found itself up 34-24 at intermission.

After an early layup by the Gothic Knights to start the third quarter, McKenzie Bezon grabbed an offensive rebound and put back a layup with 9:16 left in the quarter, sparking an 8-2 Fisher run to put the Cardinals up by 14 with 7:28 remaining in the quarter. Fisher would eventually finish the quarter with a 46-35 advantage.

In the final period, the Cardinals outscored NJCU 14-9 before going on to win by 16 points. Caroline Robertson and Nicole Robinson each had four points in the fourth quarter.

Robinson and senior Bridget Carney led Fisher with 10 points apiece. Robinson also finished with a team-leading seven rebounds and four assists.

Mary Kate Cusack finished with nine points, five rebounds, and a game-high five steals while Bezon tallied eight points and six rebounds in the contest.

The Cardinals will conclude their play in the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic at 2 p.m. on Sunday as it takes on host Rutgers University-Newark.
