The St. John Fisher College volleyball team won both of its Saturday games at the SUNY Polytechnic Institute Invitational after defeating Skidmore College 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19) early in the day before going on to take down SUNY Plattsburgh 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-22) in the afternoon contest.
The Cardinals improve to 10-8 on the season with the two wins and also finished with a 2-1 record at the tournament after dropping Friday night's contest against host SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
Fisher will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as it hosts Empire 8 opponent Houghton College for Senior Day.
Fisher 3, Skidmore 1The Cardinals battled Skidmore to a tight first two sets as they edged the Thoroughbreds 25-23 and 25-21 in each set respectively. Fisher held a slight advantage in kills (25-23) and was able to commit only 13 total errors on its way to a 2-0 lead in the match.
Despite falling to Skidmore 25-18 in the third set, the Cardinals bounced back to take the fourth set 25-19 behind 12 team kills in the set.
Meghan Stonebarger and
Katie Mazierski led Fisher in the contest as Stonebarger finished with a team-high 34 assists along with three blocks while Mazierski tallied 14 kills, 25 digs and two aces.
Senior
Megan Miller recorded 13 kills and led the team with four aces.
Fisher 3, SUNY Plattsburgh 0Fisher controlled the first set, winning 25-19 and posting 14 kills and only four errors. The second and third sets were more closely contested as the Cardinals held off Plattsburgh to take the second set 25-23 before going on to win the third set 25-22.
Once again Mazierski and Stonebarger led the way for Fisher as this time Stonebarger tallied 30 assists to go along with four aces while Mazierski picked up 13 kills and 15 digs in the contest.
Elise Kruez led the teams in digs with 20 as the freshman also had three aces.
