Emily Markarian recorded the first hat-trick in the four-year history of the St. John Fisher College field hockey program, as the Cardinals earned a 5-3 victory over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday.
With the win, Fisher ended the Ducks' 20-game Empire 8 regular-season winning streak that began Sept. 24, 2011 with a 7-1 win over Fisher.
The last time the two teams met was in last year's Empire 8 Conference Championship semifinal match, where the Cardinals emerged with a 3-1 victory.
Markarian opened the scoring for Fisher in the seventh minute, finding the back of the net after a
Liz Baldwin shot.
Erin Silvestri gave Stevens its first goal to even the score at one apiece. The score wouldn't remain tied for long, as Markarian notched her second goal.
Stacie Skidmore extended Fisher's lead to 3-1 when she followed through on her own blocked shot.
Markarian completed her hat trick and gave Fisher its game-winning goal in the 50th minute.
Jill Alaimo scored Fisher's fifth and final goal of the day at the 57th-minute mark to record her first goal of the season.
Victoria Alvarez tried to make a comeback for the Ducks, scoring two goals in the 53rd and 62nd minutes.
Danielle Famolaro tallied 10 saves in 70 minutes in goal.
Fisher faces nonconference opponent Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 1 p.m. Sunday at Growney Stadium.
