The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team clinched the No. 3 seed in the Empire 8 Conference championship on Saturday, as the Cardinals cruised to a 9-0 win at Utica College. The victory raises Fisher's record to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in the Empire 8 Conference. The win also pushes Fisher's winning streak to five matches.
Fisher swept all three doubles matches to take the early lead.
Nathaniel Ligon and
Jacob Zarzycki won 8-4 at first doubles, while
Adam Moran and
Daniel Tedesco picked up an 8-2 win at second doubles.
Robin Lalisse and
Vichaka Khoy won all eight games at third doubles.
In singles action,
Pat McGrath won it straight sets (6-3, 6-1) at first singles, while senior
Sheldon Mitchell cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at second singles. Ligon (third), Zarzycki (fourth), Moran (fifth) and
Kyle Stich (sixth) all won their singles match, 6-0, 6-0.
Fisher will return to action on Saturday in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Conference Championship and will square off against No. 2 Ithaca College. The match will be play outdoors at Nazareth College. If there is inclement weather, the match will be played at Mendon Racquet Club.
