Men's Basketball Nipped By Geneseo In Wendy's Semifinals

Second-seeded SUNY Geneseo advanced to the finals of the of the Wendy's College Classic after defeating third-seeded St. John Fisher College 63-55 at Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday night.  Fisher will now play in the third place game tomorrow with tipoff set for 3 p.m. against the University of Rochester at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Fisher falls to 2-2 on the season, while Geneseo improves to 3-2.   

Fisher started out strong taking an early 9-4 lead following a Stefan Bock jumper.  However, Geneseo hit four of its first five 3-pointers to take an 18-11 lead.

The Knights led by as many as 12 points but Adam Ambielli drilled a 3-pointer with under two minutes left in the half.  Although Geneseo shot 44 percent in the half compared to Fisher's 30 percent, the Knights halftime lead was single digits at 32-23.

Ambielli converted another 3-pointer to start the half, propelling Fisher to score the first eight points to cut the Geneseo lead to 32-30. 

Fisher took its first lead since early in the first half after a layup from Keegan Ryan to make it 38-36 at the 13:25 mark.

The Cardinals freshman came alive giving coach Kornaker solid minutes with Alex Sausville hitting a 3-pointer, followed by a fast break dunk from Tyler English.

The game continued to stay close before Geneseo nailed consecutive shots from 3-point land to open up a 52-48 advantage with just over five minutes remaining. 

In the closing minutes Fisher had an opportunity to cut in to the Knights six point lead, but only converted 3-of-6 from the line to make it 56-53.  Geneseo converted 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. 

Ryan finished with his second consecutive double-double finishing as the Cardinals' leading scorer with 16 points and eight boards.  Ambielli was the only other Fisher player in double-digits as he finished the game with 11 points.

Sausville racked up eight points on the day.
