The St. John Fisher College field hockey team came up short 6-3 against visiting No. 12 Skidmore College in both squads' regular-season finale on Sunday.
Â
The Thoroughbreds struck first in the 17th minute with a goal from Becca Halter. Their lead wouldn't last for long, as
Jessie Smyrski recorded her second career goal just one minute later.
Â
The Cardinals would take the lead with a goal from
Emily Markarian in the 29th minute. Skidmore wouldn't let Fisher enjoy its lead heading into halftime, however. The Thoroughbreds played through their final play from a corner and tied the game at 2-2 with Halter's second goal of the day.
Â
Dani DiGregory tallied three consecutive goals, including the game-winner, to propel Skidmore's offense past Fisher. DiGregory finished the game with an assist, as well.
Â
Fisher's last goal came in the 55th minute to make it a 5-3 game. On a play that began with
Stacie Skidmore,
Elizabeth Cusack found Markarian on the right side, who shot it past diving goalkeeper Amy Beck.
Â
Skidmore scored its insurance goal in the 62nd minute – this time from Sam Revera.
Â
Goalkeeper
Danielle Famolaro faced 44 shots, 26 of which were on goal. The junior matched her career-high in saves with 20.
Â
Fisher, now 11-8 overall, continues onto the Empire 8 Championship as the No. 2 seed. The Cardinals will first face No. 3 Washington & Jefferson College, who they defeated 2-1 earlier this season. The game is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at No 1. Utica College.
