The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season, all the way on the west coast, defeating California Lutheran 62-58 in Santa Cruz, California on Sunday.
With the win the Cardinals improve to 1-1 overall, while the Regals fall to 0-1.
It was a game in which Fisher saw Sydney Bloomstein, Mary Kate Cusack and Portia Velasco each pour in 13 points apiece.
Fisher held a slight advantage 33-32 at the half and It would remain close throughout. The game featured 15 lead-changes, but the Cardinals took the lead for good in the final 10 seconds. Â
After a layup from the Regals tied the game at 58s, Velasco scored the game-winning bucket on a layup with eight seconds left.  On the ensuing possession, Cusack blocked a potential game-tying basket, and Bloomstein sealed the win with two free throws with one second remaining
The Cardinals benefited from a strong defensive outing in which Fisher picked up 13 steals. Velasco tallied a game-high four steals, while Bloomstein, Cusack and Emily Piacentini each notched three apiece. Fisher finished with a 27-7 advantage in points off turnovers in the game.
Claire Walsh and Brooke Seavitt each added in five points for the Cardinals.
Fisher will head back east to take on Medaille College on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Buffalo, NY.
