The St. John Fisher College volleyball hosted Stevens Institute of Technology and Alfred University in a tri-match on Saturday with the Cardinals dropping a four set contest to the Ducks to start the day, before rebounding to knock off the Saxons in straight sets. Fisher fell 25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 17-25 to the Ducks and defeated Alfred 25-15, 25-17, 25-17.
Fisher moves to 9-13 overall on the season and 2-3 in Empire 8 play.
Stevens 3, Fisher 1
Fisher took the opening set against the Ducks after trailing 8-3 early on. The Cardinals were behind 22-19 but scored the final six points of the match including the final two off kills from
Madison Karwas.
The Cardinals trailed by as much as six in the second set before cutting Stevens lead to just 23-21, though the Ducks rallied to take the set.
Karwas ended with a team-high 10 kills, followed by
Paige Willson and
Anna Marcy who each had nine apiece.
Erin Crandall and
Katie Mazierski combined for 39 digs.
Fisher 3, Alfred 0
Fisher made quick work of Alfred in its second match of the day winning the first three sets. Fisher took the opening set 25-15.
The key point in set one came after the game was tied 9-9 when the Cardinals rattled off six consecutive points to take a 15-9 lead capped off by a kill from Karwas. The home team led by five or more points the rest of the way to take the opening set.
The Cardinals had a back and forth second set with a kill from the Saxons cutting Fisher's lead to 17-16. Fisher, however, would score nine of the last 10 points of the set to win 25-17.
The final set of the match was much of the same as Alfred cut the Cardinals lead to 15-11 after an attack error. The Cardinals responded with four straight points to take command of the game.
Marcy led the way with 11 kills for Fisher while also collecting eight digs. Karwas and Willson each chipped in eight kills, while Crandall tallied a team-high with 11 digs.
The Cardinals return to action at 7 p.m on Wednesday when they will travel to Houghton College.
