A new season begins tonight for the St. John Fisher College men's and women's basketball programs, as the Cardinals travel to Houghton College for each team's first Empire 8 Conference matchup.
The men's squads will take the floor first at 6 p.m. on Friday night. Fisher (5-4, 0-0) is coming off back-to-back wins over Southern Maine University and Thomas College in the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament held at St. John Fisher College last weekend. The Cardinals dropped Southern Maine 77-65 on Sunday night and followed it up with 85-50 defeat of Thomas College on Monday where the Cardinals drained 14 3-pointers. The Highlanders (3-6, 0-0) most recently dropped an 80-51 decision to Radford University on Monday.
The women's team (6-3, 0-0) will square off against Houghton after the men's game at 8 p.m. Fisher has been idle since December 7, when it knocked off the University of Rochester 72-60 to earn a third place finish in the Wendy's College Classic.Â
Portia Velasco had a game-high 30 points converting 18-of-20 from the charity stripe. The Highlanders (4-5, 0-0) are winners of three straight, with the last being a 73-58 defeat of SUNY Canton last Friday.
