Men's Basketball Pushes Win Streak to Three Games With Win at Houghton

BOX SCORE

The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team pushed its winning streak to three games after it defeated Houghton College 59-54 despite trailing at halftime on Friday evening at the Nielsen Center in Houghton, N.Y.

After falling behind 25-21 after the first half of play, Fisher would eventually take a seven point lead courtesy of a 13-3 run highlighted by an old-fashioned three-point play by Keegan Ryan.

Houghton would cut the lead to five points before Adam Ambielli drained a three pointer from the corner to give the visiting Cardinals a 40-32 edge, forcing the Highlanders to call a time out to regroup.

The break in action did little to halt Fisher's momentum as the Cardinals rattled off six unanswered points capped by another and-one from Ryan to give Fisher its largest lead of the game  - 13 points – as the Cardinals led 51-38 with 6:29 remaining in the game.

The lead would be short-lived however, as Houghton went on a 7-0 run of its own to cut the margin to only five points with 2:00 left to play.

Tyler Hart moved the advantage to seven points after making a pair of free-throws, but Houghton was able to bury yet another from behind the arc, forcing Fisher to call a timeout as its lead had dwindled to four points.

After forcing a Fisher turnover, the Highlanders cut the gap to two points, but Fisher would hold on, going 3-4 from the charity stripe in the game's closing seconds to seal the win.

Ambielli led the Cardinals with 17 points on 6-16 shooting from the floor.  The junior guard has been on a roll of late, averaging nearly 20 points per game during Fisher's win streak.  Stefan Bock and Ryan each notched 13 points; while Hart registered five points to go along with three assists and one steal.

Fisher, now 6-4 overall will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday against host Elmira as it continues with Empire 8 play.
