The St. John Fisher College softball program split its doubleheader with Elmira College on Sunday. Freshman
Jessie Smyrski hit her first career home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Cardinals to a 1-0 win over the Soaring Eagles. With the win, Fisher improves to 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8 Conference.
Game One: Elmira 6, Fisher 3
The Soaring Eagles scored one in the first, three in fifth and two in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead. Fisher, who picked up its first hit of the game on a double off the fence in left-center by
Leanne Merchant, rallied in the sixth.
Jessie Smyrski singled to score
Kate Disbrow, who reached on a slapped-double off the third baseman's glove.
Kayla Goodberlet then ripped a single to left, scoring
Meghan Burns, who singled in the frame.
After Merchant was hit by a pitch to load the bases and send the tying run to the plate with one out, the Cardinals weren't able to capitalize with
Sarah Fordyce plating a run on an RBI-ground out.
Game Two: Fisher 1, Elmira 0
Smyrski picked the right time to hit her first career homer – a solo shot over the fence in right-center for the game's only run.
Sarah Stefanon earned the win on the mound. The senior allowed just three hits and struck out six to raise her record to 6-3 on the year and drop her ERA to 0.65. Merchant singled in the game to extend her hitting streak to 14 games, while Goodberlet did as well, pushing her streak to 12 games. Fordyce led all Fisher hitters with two on in the game.
Fisher hosts University of Pittsburgh-Bradford at 3 p.m. on Monday.
