The St. John Fisher College softball team extended its win streak to 10-straight games, sweeping D'Youville College on Friday night. The Cardinals (27-11) won game one 2-1 before pulling away in game two, 10-3. The Spartans fall to 15-13 with the losses.
Game One: Fisher 2, D'Youville 1
Leanne Merchant was the only Cardinal to pick up a hit through the first four innings, before her team picked up five in the fifth and sixth inning to score two runs on the Spartans. In the fifth,
Sarah Fordyce led off the inning with a single, was moved to second by Lindsay Holtz and was eventually scored on a single from
Krista Robarge.
The following inning,
Jessie Smyrski and
Kayla Goodberlet went back-to-back with doubles, putting Fisher up 2-0.
The home Spartans scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but with runners on second and third,
Sarah Stefanon struck out the final D'Youville batter to seal the win.
D'Youville picked up a hit in each of the first three innings but couldn't make anything of them. In the second, the Spartans looked to score a run after a one-out double put a runner in scoring position, but Stefanon struck out the next two batters to end the threat. Stefanon finished the game with 11 strikeouts.
Game Two: Fisher 10, D'Youville 3
Fordyce put the Cardinals on the board in the first inning with a two-out double that scored Goodberlet from second and Merchant from first. Goodberlet had gotten on after an error from the Spartans pitcher, while Merchant hit a single.
The Cardinals went up 6-0 in the fifth inning after posting four runs in the stanza. Robarge led off the fifth with a solo home run and
Kate Disbrow followed with a single before stealing second base. After the steal, Goodberlet hit another double to score Disbrow. Merchant followed that with a two-run home run.
After another run made it 7-0 in the top of the sixth, D'Youville scored three unearned runs, but Fisher added three more in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Stefanon picked up the second win as well, posting an eight strikeout performance while scattering five hits. Merchant led the Cardinals with four hits in the game and three RBI. Fordyce and Robarge also had three RBI, while
Danielle Leone and Disbrow also had two hits.
The Cardinals will return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they travel to St. Lawrence for their regular season finale.
