The St. John Fisher College softball team took to the field Sunday to finish Friday's halted game with Nazareth College. The Cardinals won the game 8-0 in five innings, improving their record to 25-11 and 10-4 in the Empire 8. Nazareth falls to 5-18, 3-9 with the loss.
The game resumed in the bottom of the second inning, with the Golden Flyers up to bat. However, they trailed 5-0 at that point after Fisher posted all five in the first inning. After
Jessie Smyrski and
Kayla Goodberlet got on base with singles, they were both scored on a double from
Leanne Merchant.
A two-out error from the Golden Flyer's shortstop allowed Merchant to score and
Olivia Fusilli to get on base.
Krista Robarge ended the innings scores with a single to score Fusilli and
Danielle Leone who reached on a single.
The Cardinals upped their lead to eight in the top of the fifth inning with Robarge again scoring Fusilli with two out, making it 6-0. The inning continued after
Lindsey Holtz reached on an error, bringing Leone across the plate.
Meghan Burns gave the Cardinals the eight runs they needed for a mercy-rule victory when she singled to score Robarge.
Sarah Stefanon kept Nazareth off the board all game as she racked up eight strikeouts and scattered three hits. Robarge led the Cardinals with three hits on the day.
Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Friday against D'Youville College. The game will be played at the Amherst Pepsi Arena.
