Cardinals' Bats Come Alive Against RIT

The St. John Fisher College softball team posted 30 runs over 11 innings to sweep the visiting Rochester Insititute of Technology Tigers on Saturday afternoon.  The two wins improve Fisher to 9-7 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 5-7 overall.

Game One: Fisher 13, RIT 4 (6 innings):

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the Cardinals entered the 6th inning up by just one run at 5-4. However, the team made no qualms about it as it posted eight runs to end the contest one inning short.  Jessie Smyrski led the inning off with a grounder down the left field line before Kayla Goodberlet, who was looking to sacrifice bunt, was intentionally walked after hitting two home runs earlier in the game.

After both advanced a base on a Leanne Merchant sacrifice bunt, Smyrski scored and Goodberlet moved to third on a wild pitch. The dominos fell from that point when Sarah Fordyce tripled to make it 7-4.

After Jess D'Angelo drew a walk, Krista Robarge and Christina Sakran both tallied an RBI, upping the Cardinal lead to 9-4.  Kate Disbrow reached on a fielder's choice after the Tigers chose to throw home, but Robarge was able to score.

The Tigers had a chance to get the second out of the inning, but a fielding error by the third baseman allowed Meghan Burns to reach and Goodberlet was then intentially walked for the second time in the sixth.

With the bases loaded and the score 11-3, Merchant hit a double that was just shy of the center field wall, bringing home Burns and Disbrow for the win.

Fisher scored its first run of the game in the second inning, when Burns brought in Robarge. The next inning, Goodberlet hit a two RBI shot to left field putting the Cardinals up 3-0.

RIT posted one run in the fourth, but Fisher responded with two when Goodberlet hit another two run shot, this time to right center.

The Tigers cut the Fisher lead to one with a three-run fifth inning, but the Cardinals were able to hold onto the lead.

Danielle Leone started the game for Fisher, pitching five innings for the win. Lauren Wesolowski closed things out to pick up her first save of the year.

Merchant and Robarge both finished the game 3-for-4, while Burns had three hits in five at bats.

Game Two: Fisher 17, RIT 1 (5 innings)

Like Game One, Fisher posted another explosive inning, this time scoring 14 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Up 3-1, Burns led off the inning with a solo shot to left field.  That got the ball rolling, as Fisher went around through the line-up twice in the fourth.

The Cardinals added three more runs with one out, then went off for 10 more with two gone.  The inning was highlighted by a grand slam from Fordyce who drilled the ball to left field with Merchant, Goodberlet and Smyrski on the bases.

In that inning, Fisher drew five walks (and 11 in the game), including two with the bases loaded.

The 14-fourth inning runs marked the most runs a Cardinal team has scored in a single inning since April 30, 2007 when Fisher posted 20 runs in the first inning in a 26-0 shutout of Wells College.

RIT's lone run came in the top of the fourth inning when Burns dropped a ball in left field, however, she negated that run with her lead-off homer just minutes later.

Sarah Stefanon pitched all five innings, picking up her fourth-straight win.  Stefanon allowed just three hits in 19 at bats, striking out 10 of the RIT hitters.

Fordyce finished 2-for-3 in the game with five RBI, while D'Angelo and Robarge also had multi-hit outings.

The Cardinals will return to action at 3 p.m. on Thursday when they travel to D'Youville College for a nonconference doubleheader.
