The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team won its eighth straight game, picking up an 82-73 win over nationally-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday at Fisher's Bobby Wanzer Court.
With the win, Fisher improves to 17-8 overall and 10-4 in the Empire 8, while Stevens, ranked 24
th in the d3hoops.com poll, falls to 21-4, 11-3.
It is the 25
th time in the past 26 years that Fisher has finished the regular season with a winning record.
Chaz Lott led Fisher on the day with 18 points, six assists and seven rebounds, while
Thad Wier tallied 15 points, four boards and three steals.
Sophomore
Optimystik Kinard came off the bench and chipped in with 12 points. Senior
Justin Plata finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while classmate
Jason Norsen finished with eight points and four boards.
Fisher took the lead for good a three-point-play from Kinard just over five minutes into the game. Fisher led 36-31 at the break and pushed its lead to double digits on two different occasions, but the Ducks hung tough. Stevens made it a one-possession game five different times in the final eight minutes, but the Cardinals never relinguished the lead.
Grant Wrap drained two 3-pointers in the second half - his last one coming with 4:08 left, making it 70-64.
Fisher will return to action at 8 p.m. next Friday in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Conference Championship. The Cardinals will be the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 2 Ithaca College at top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology. Ithaca has already beaten Fisher twice this season, but Fisher is 11-3 all-time in Empire 8 Championship competition, including 4-0 against the Bombers.
