Volleyball Falls to Rochester in Home Opener

Box Score

The St. John Fisher College volleyball team fell in its home opener, 3-0, to University of Rochester.  The Cardinals now fall to 2-12 on the season, while the Yellowjackets improve to 15-4 on the year.

The Cardinals jumped out to a fast start in the first set, winning three of the first four points, but the visitors wouldn't back down as they tied things up and eventually took hold of the lead for good.  Trailing 20-14 in that set, the Cardinals called a timeout out and came back, pulling within two points with the score 22-20 in favor of Rochester.  However, that would be as close as the Cardinals came in that set, with the visitor taking it 25-20.

The Yellowjackets handled the second set with ease, winning 25-14 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Cardinals made the visitors earn the final set, as they put the pressure on with early ties at 3, 5, 7 and 8.  But, Rochester was able to break out to a 15-9 lead before Fisher came charging back, forcing the Yellowjackets to call timeout with the score 17-14 in their favor.  After six points by each team, Rochester called one more time out when the score was 23-20, only to come out and close the game with back-to-back points.

Rachael Kline led the Cardinals with six kills, while Erica Stickler provided 14 assists.  Megan Miller, Andrea Gillespie and Kline all had double digit digs, posting 12, 11 and 10, respectively.

Paige Willson totaled four blocks on the day.

The Cardinals will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday facing Utica College, completing back-to-back home contests.
