The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team
fell 15-4 to No. 1 Salisbury University in the Second Round of the NCAA Championship on Saturday afternoon in Salisbury, MD. Fisher took a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the contest, winning several draw controls to start the game, but couldn't hold on against the undefeated Sea Gulls.
Salisbury did not score for the first 17:01, which is the second-longest amount of time it has taken the Sea Gulls to score their first goal all season long. Franklin and Marshall held Salisbury for the opening 22:07 on March 25
th.
Taylor Hughes found
Melissa Leonhard on both of the Cardinals first two scores, each on identical cuts across the middle by Leonhard. Fisher controlled the draw and the clock for the first 15 minutes of the affair before Salisbury found its footing.
Fisher scored its second goal 9:41 into the opening period but could not find the net the rest of the half, even though it did create several good looks, two of which found the crossbar. Salisbury scored seven goals over the last 20:19 of the first half to take a 7-2 lead into the locker room.
Hughes added a goal to her two assists just 1:09 into the second period to cut the score to 7-3 but it was the last time Fisher would score until Hughes found the net again with 6:14 left, to make the score 13-4.
Hughes found Leonhard again in the second half on what appeared to be a goal, but a yellow card was given to Leonhard for a dangerous shot, sending her to the bench for the last 19:03 of play with her second yellow of the game. Leonhard had been pivotal for the Cardinals amounts of possessions up until that point as she had won five draw controls for her team.
Leonhard led the team in draw controls and tied with Hughes for the lead with two goals. Hughes also finished with two assists and three draw controls to lead the Cardinals.
Caroline Trpcevski had a huge first half, keeping the Sea Gulls at bay for most of the period, turning away six shots. She finished the game with eight stops on the day.
The Cardinals held a 13-7 advantage on the draw but was outshot 29-15.
Fisher finishes the year with a 15-5 record, setting a College-record for wins in a season. The Second Round of the NCAA Championship is also the furthest a women's lacrosse team has gone in program history, along with the 2009 squad.
