Women's Lacrosse Wins Fifth-Straight; Heads to Empire 8 Championship

The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team closed out the 2012 regular season with a 15-8 win over the St. Lawrence Saints on Tuesday afternoon.  Fisher (12-4, 6-1 E8) will now head to the Empire 8 Conference Championship, as the No. 2 Cardinals are scheduled to face the No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks at 2 p.m. on Saturday on the campus of No. 1 seeded Ithaca College. 
 
The winner of that game will move on to play the winner of No. 4 Nazareth at No. 1 Ithaca at 1 p.m. on Sunday for the Empire 8 crown.
 
St. Lawrence scored the game's opening goal, but it was the only lead the host would have as Fisher held a sizable lead for the rest of the contest.  Fisher went on a seven-goal run to make the game 7-1 after 18 minutes, with three goals from Bridget Alberts and two from Melissa LeonhardTaylor Hughes and Emily Bryerton each also scored a goal in the span.
 
Leonhard and Hughes would both finish the game with seven points, as Leonhard scored four goals and three assists to tie her career point total and Hughes added two goals and tied her career-high with five assists.
 
St. Lawrence answered with three goals to cut the Fisher lead to three at 7-4, but it was the closest the Saints would get.
 
Fisher continued to reign in the second half, as they outscored the home team 7-3 over the final 30 minutes.  Leonhard added two of her four goals in the stanza, while Jill Zerrillo added both of her tallies in the half.  Zerrillo also had an assist to finish with three points.
 
Bryerton and Alberts both finished with a hat trick in the contest, with Alberts also picking up an assist.  Shannon McDermott scored a goal for Fisher while Lindsey Shoales recorded one assist.  McDermott led Fisher with four draw controls, while Shoales and Leonhard both had three ground balls. 
 
Caroline Trpcevski earned her fifth-straight win between the pipes for the Cardinals.
