Softball Sweeps Pitt-Bradford at St. Bonaventure

The St. John Fisher College softball team swept Pitt-Bradford on Monday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader held at St. Bonaventure College in Olean. With the two wins, Fisher moves its record to 21-5 overall while Pitt-Bradford falls to 3-22.

Game One – Fisher 17, Pitt-Bradford 5:

In a mercy-rule shortened, five-inning game, the Cardinals found a way to score in each of their at-bats, including a thunderous eight-run third.

Jennifer Vanek scored first for Fisher, reaching on a walk, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from Meghan Burns before scoring on a Kaylee Tallman single to center field.

The following error saw Vanek reach again, this time by virtue of an error by the pitcher followed by Vanek wreaking havoc on the base paths, forcing a throwing error by the pitcher to advance to third. Burns the singled to third base, driving in Vanek.

In the third, the Cardinals got their first two batters on with singles before two-straight foul outs. However, Fisher caused a raucous with two outs, scoring eight runs, including a three-run home run by Burns and a two-run shot by Leanne Merchant.

Fisher added four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth before the mercy rule was applied.

Kate Disbrow led the Cardinals with four hits, driving in the first run of the explosion in the third along with two runs of her own. Carissa Carlson, Shelby Marie, Jessica D'Angelo joined Burns, Merchant and Tallman in a multiple hit game, each finishing with two hits.
Burns led the team with four RBI while Merchant and D'Angelo each scored twice and drove another two scores in. Marie and Jennifer Martin also collected two RBI apiece.

Danielle Leone, the reigning Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week, improved to 12-1 after going three innings of three-hit ball, allowing no runs or walks in the outing, while fanning three Pitt-Bradford hitters.

Lauren Wesolowski closed the game in the circle for the Cardinals, pitching two innings with four strikeouts.

Game Two – Fisher 9, Pitt-Bradford 0:

Sarah Stefanon got the start for Fisher, collecting her ninth win of the year (9-4) in four innings in the circle, allowing just two-hits and no runs. Stefanon gave up just one base on balls while earning five strikeouts. Rachel Angell pitched the last inning of another mercy-rule shortened game, throwing a perfect inning, including two fanned batters.

The Cardinals yet again had a busy third inning, this time mustering six runs. Merchant was masterful in the inning, hitting a double and a single for two of her game-best tying three hits. Disbrow also finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, driving in a run while scoring twice. Merchant ended with the inverse, plating two Cardinals while scoring once herself.

Megan Zoerb got in the action with two hits of her own while scoring and driving in one run. Vanek rounded out the Cardinals with multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.

Fisher will return action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday when it hosts Keuka College for a doubleheader.
