Fisher Softball Splits with St. Lawrence on Sunday

The St. John Fisher College softball team split its non-conference doubleheader with St. Lawrence University on Sunday afternoon at home. With the split the Cardinals are now 28-10 on the season and will return to action at 3 p.m. tomorrow when they host Keuka College in a doubleheader that will conclude the 2012 regular season.

Game One- Fisher 4, St. Lawrence 0:

Fisher got all the run support it would need in the first inning when Leanne Merchant drove in Jennifer Vanek from third base on a ground out to short. Vanek led off the inning with a single to center field before moving to second when Megan Zoerb reached base on an error and Kayla Goodberlet pushed her to third with a sacrifice bunt.

The true constant remained, as Danielle Leone pitched a complete-game three hitter without allowing a run to cross the plate, improving her already nationally second-best 0.79 ERA. Leone is now 16-3 in 2012.

In the third inning, the Cardinals scored their remaining three runs when Carissa Carlson doubled in a run and another two made it home on an error by the center fielder on a fly ball.

Vanek was the only Fisher batter to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Sarah Fordyce, Jennifer Martin and Carlson had the other three Cardinals' hits, finishing with one apiece.

Game Two – St. Lawrence 4, Fisher 1:

St. Lawrence scored two runs in the third inning, putting the game out of reach for Fisher, despite several rallies that fell just short.

The Cardinals best opportunity came in the fifth inning when Carlson started with a double that caromed off the wall and Fordyce followed suit with a shot to the fence in left field that went for two bases and scored her teammate.

Unfortunately, however, the Saints retired the next three Fisher batters to control the damage.

Sarah Stefanon started in the circle and took the loss to fall to 12-7 on the year. The junior allowed 10 hits in seven innings while surrendering four runs despite striking out seven St. Lawrence batters.
