Softball Splits Doubleheader with Elmira

The St. John Fisher College softball team split with Elmira College on Sunday afternoon in Elmira, NY. Fisher moves to 27-9 on the season and 8-4 in the Empire 8 Conference.

Game One – Elmira 6, Fisher 5:

Despite leading 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals squandered three runs, allowing the Soaring Eagles to win in walk-off fashion.

Elmira got three runs in the inning on four hits. With runners on second and third, Fisher decided to walk the bases loaded with first base open to create a force at any base. Pitcher Danielle Leone let a pitch get away to the next batter, hitting the Elmira hitter to bring around the game-winner.

Leone fell to 15-3 on the season with the loss; scattering 12 hits while allowing six runs, five of which were earned. She also gave up just one walk while fanning five Soaring Eagles.

Fisher got multiple-hits from Leanne Merchant, Kayla Goodberlet and Carissa Carlson, each finishing with two hits. Merchant drove in two runs while scoring twice herself, while Goodberlet and Carlson each crossed the plate once.

Sarah Fordyce did not record a hit in the game but finished tied with Merchant for a team and game-high two RBI.

Game Two – Fisher 11, Elmira 5:

Fisher trailed 1-0 through three innings before waking its bats up, scoring three runs in the fourth and sixth innings and exploding for five scores in the fifth.

All nine starters for the Cardinals finished with a hit, with six of those starters finishing with two hits apiece. Carlson, Fordyce, Kate Disbrow and Krista Robarge all finished 2-for-4, with Carlson and Fordyce driving in a game-high three runs each. Robarge and Disbrow each had two RBI.

Sarah Stefanon improved to 11-6 on the season, striking out 10 batters while giving up four earned runs on seven hits.

The Cardinals will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts St. Lawrence University in a doubleheader.
