No. 20 Softball Drops Two to Visiting Ithaca

The St. John Fisher College softball team dropped two games to Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon at Fisher Field to fall to 21-7 on the season and 3-3 in the Empire 8 Conference. Ithaca came in to the game with an 11-10 record but was perfect in conference play and remained that way after the contests with the nationally-ranked Cardinals.

Utica will come to Fisher Field at 1 p.m. tomorrow for a conference doubleheader which is also Alumni Day for the Cardinals as 22 former student-athletes from the program's history will come out to support this year's team.

Game One - Ithaca 4, Fisher 3:

Fisher led the game 3-1 in the seventh inning and had two outs on the Bombers before Ithaca rallied to score three runs, including the go-ahead which turned out to be enough to spoil the Cardinals efforts. All three of the runs scored with two outs were unearned to starting pitcher Danielle Leone, who fell to 12-2 on the year.

Leone pitched a complete game, striking out five and allowing no walks while surrendering nine hits.

Kayla Goodberlet, Leanne Merchant and Sarah Fordyce each finished with two hits, with Goodberlet and Merchant tallying one RBI.

Kaylee Tallman, who entered the game with a team-best .588 batting average, went 1-for-3 while Kelly Jones and Meghan Burns each finished with a hit.

Game Two – Ithaca 7, Fisher 4:

Ithaca scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed the Cardinals.

Fisher got on the board in the second when Tallman sent a solo homer over the center field fence. The Bombers answered right back with two more runs to make the score 5-3.

The Cardinals were not done however, as Burns singled to lead off the third. Goodberlet followed with a single that dropped in on the right field line. After two Fisher batters were unable to reach base, Fordyce came to the plate and smashed a bomb off the scoreboard beyond the right field fence to make it a one-run game, 5-4.

That was the closest the Cardinals would get the rest of the game as Ithaca added two more runs for the 7-4 win.

Burns finished with a game-best four hits, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a run scored. Tallman was the other Cardinal with a multiple hit game, finishing 2-for-4, crossing the plate once and driving in another.

Sarah Stefanon got the loss to fall to 9-5 on the season. The junior gave up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out two Bombers before being relieved by Leone with an out in the fifth.

Leone pitched the last 2.2 innings, giving up four hits and a run while also fanning two batters.
