Ithaca College scored three straight goals in the fourth quarter and
rallied to knock off nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College 12-11 in a pivotal Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse matchup.
With the win, Ithaca moves to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8, while the Cardinals, ranked 21
st in the latest USILA poll, fall to 8-3, 3-1. The loss snaps Fisher's seven-game winning streak.
Fisher led 10-9 with 10:02 left in the fourth quarter on a goal from
Michael Boisvert. Ithaca tied the game up just over a minute later and took its first lead since midway through the first quarter on a goal with 6:14 left. The Bombers added an insurance-goal with five minutes remaining.
Fisher's
Kyle Denhoff scored the game's final goal with 12.3 seconds left. The Cardinals won the ensuing faceoff with time running out and failed to attempt a shot.
Ithaca jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Fisher scored the next five goals. Ithaca pulled to within one at 5-4, before Fisher's
Mitch Ritchie scored off a pass from
Connor Henderson to give the Cardinals a 6-4 lead at the break.
Ritchie and Henderson connected again early in the third quarter to put Fisher up 7-4, but the Bombers answered back with three straight goals, tying the game at 7s.
Henderson scored his third goal of the game with 5:25 left in the third to put Fisher back up, but Ithaca tied the game up again, just one minute later.
Fisher led 9-8 going into the fourth quarter on a goal from Denhoff with 6.7 seconds left in the period on a nice pass from Henderson.
Henderson led the Cardinals on the day with seven points on three goals and four assists. Ritchie finished with three goals, while Denhoff added two.
Greg Ramsden,
Jeff Wester and Boisvert also scored.
Ryan Freije and
Clint Masterson each won seven faceoffs.
Scott Campbell scooped up five ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Jimmy Burgasser had four groundballs,
Andrew Knoblauch and
Mitch Bailey each added three.
Jamie Campagna took the loss in goal and made three saves. Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at SUNY Oswego.
